Workshop Outcomes
By the end of the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Workshop, participants will be able to:

Describe and recognize characteristics of mild to significant autism.
-
Distinguish between autism and other behaviorally similar disorders.
-
Interpret international diagnostic criteria and their relationship to the assessment and identification of ASD
-
Interpret various screening and diagnostic tools used in the identification of ASD.
-
Anticipate parental concerns and demonstrate cultural competency when considering parental and familial reactions to an autism diagnosis.
-
Confront misconceptions and assumptions about autism in the broader society.
-
Understand the neurobiological basis of autism, etiology and global prevalence of autism.
-
Critique the benefits and concerns associated with various intervention strategies and approaches for addressing ASD.
By the end of the Learning Disabilities Workshop, participants will be able to:

Describe and recognize characteristics of specific learning disabilities (SLD).
-
Understand potential causes of SLD.
-
Distinguish between different subtypes of SLD, including dyslexia and dyscalculia.
-
Distinguish between related conditions and SLD.
-
Interpret diagnostic criteria and their relationship to the assessment and identification of SLD.
-
Anticipate parental concerns and demonstrate cultural competency when considering familial and educator reactions to a learning disability diagnosis.
-
Analyze the potential benefits of various instructional strategies and approaches for addressing dyscalculia and dyslexia.
