Workshop Outcomes 

 

By the end of the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Workshop, participants will be able to: 

  1. Describe and recognize characteristics of mild to significant autism. 

  2. Distinguish between autism and other behaviorally similar disorders.  

  3. Interpret international diagnostic criteria and their relationship to the assessment and identification of ASD 

  4. Interpret various screening and diagnostic tools used in the identification of ASD. 

  5. Anticipate parental concerns and demonstrate cultural competency when considering parental and familial reactions to an autism diagnosis. 

  6. Confront misconceptions and assumptions about autism in the broader society. 

  7. Understand the neurobiological basis of autism, etiology and global prevalence of autism. 

  8. Critique the benefits and concerns associated with various intervention strategies and approaches for addressing ASD.  


By the end of the Learning Disabilities Workshop, participants will be able to: 

  1. Describe and recognize characteristics of specific learning disabilities (SLD). 

  2. Understand potential causes of SLD. 

  3. Distinguish between different subtypes of SLD, including dyslexia and dyscalculia.  

  4. Distinguish between related conditions and SLD. 

  5. Interpret diagnostic criteria and their relationship to the assessment and identification of SLD. 

  6. Anticipate parental concerns and demonstrate cultural competency when considering familial and educator reactions to a learning disability diagnosis. 

  7. Analyze the potential benefits of various instructional strategies and approaches for addressing dyscalculia and dyslexia.
